K Street Convent and School
Description
An account of the resource
A side view of the K Street Convent. The image of the convent is of the 1908 renovation completed by Sister Superior Mary Appolonia. The original building was build by the women of the Saint Aloysius Relief Society and was intended to be both a convent for the Sisters and laundry for poor women in the area, where they could earn a wage and their children would be looked after by the Sisters. Because this fell outside of the scope of the mission of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, namely to provide education to young poor girls, the women of the society compromised and offered the building to the Sisters as long as they worked in the interest of the poor. The Sisters kept their promise and opened an Industrial School for poor girls in 1873.
